I'm looking for the just the right college...?
I am only a 10th grader but i really want to be prepared and know where I'm going and what it will take to get me there. As of right now I want to be a fashion designer, but I am also interested in graphic designing and journalism. Others I am considering are photography, drawing, painting, and just other art classes in general. I have a 3.0 GPA and on my freshman Act I sadly scored only an 18 but i plan on taking it as many times possible to get a much better score. I live in Louisiana so I hope to berecieving Tops, but unfortunatly Tops is only a valid choice for Lousiana schools. Anyhow please help me with my search my future is very important to me.
If you decide to go to a pure art school, rather than a university with a good art program in it, your ACT and GPA won't hold you back too much. It'll be mainly your portfolio that gets you in. But since you may also be interested in journalism, a broad university that also has good art programs would probably be a better fit, and your ACT and GPA are going to be a factor there.
The best art school in Louisiana is at Louisiana State University, in Baton Rouge. Your ACT is low for them, but if you can bring it up to a 20 or higher, and if your portfolio and the rest of your application is strong, you might get in there. I'd consider it a reach school for you, but one well worth targeting.
Tulane also has a strong art school, but your ACT is way low for them. I don't think you can bring your ACT up high enough for them.
Those are the two best art schools in Louisiana. Other good art programs in your area, which I think may be in your range re: ACT and GPA, include:
- Savannah College of Art
- Memphis College of Art
- Kansas City Art Institute (not part of the Art Institute chain of schools, which I don't like)
Before you retake the ACT, get an ACT test prep book, and go through it thoroughly. Do at least a couple more practice ACT exams before you take the real one. If your school has an inexpensive ACT prep class, you could take it, too - but for most students, the books are good. I like the ones by Kaplan very much, and you can get those for maybe $20-30 in your local bookstore. Your school library may also have them, but make sure they aren't too old.
