I want to be a fashion photgrapher, and I'm sixteen!?

I live in Sacramento California, and my goals right now are to graduate high school then pursue a career as a fashion photographer? How can I achieve this? I am currently saving up for a nixon d2x camera and a fashion photography book to get me started. I am also trying to get accepted into Uc berkely but Im not sure if they cover the type pf photography im interested in Can you help me??

What are some colleges I should be interested in other than berkely? ucla, san fran ?? those are my three top choices. and how should i prepare at my age? summer is coming up so I'll have more time.

with the extra time you have, shoot shoot shoot! look at fashion magazines, find photographers you like, study the images to see if you can figure out how they did the lighting, try and re-create some of the images - you'll learn a lot. also, this summer, do some research to find photographers in CA that you like who are shooting REAL stuff (ad campaigns, lookbooks etc.) reach out the their studios (if you email, followup with a phone call right after - they get flooded with emails usually and can easily miss/overlook stuff from people they don't know. let them know you're 16 and you're thinking about this as a career and ask if there's any chance you could come in to either watch or help out (assist) on a shoot. Hopefully you'll find someone who can get you in on set for something so you can see how it all goes down!

now, for colleges. If Fashion is really what you know you want to be in, look at schools in NY. A big part of making it in fashion photography is networking, and when it comes to fashion you can do far far more of that in New York. While you're at school you'll be able to make connections with other students at FIT and Parsons and what not and do shoots with them of their student work - some of them will go on to be successful in the industry and if you can establish connections with them hopefully they'll continue working with you once they go pro.

goodluck!!
