Learn Photography Lighting Techniques - Fast!

We set eyes on a stunning photograph…possibly hanging on a wall somewhere, and we assume "WOW my photography does not look like THAT!" And then we hurry out and pay out 1000s of dollars buying the most recent paraphernalia - publications on photography lighting techniques and so on. Nevertheless it STILL doesn't work! Here is why…

The best pros and amateurs alike all understand something on the subject of photography lighting techniques that many people don't really "understand!"

What makes a photograph give the impression of being amazingly real and explode from the page isn't just light…it is the shadows. One major fact to forever remember is

Shadows Define Form!

One part of photo light education which is greatly ignored and under considered is the shadow. The vast majority of us often over light our pictures and thus eliminate the shadows.

True we are able to see the face, but it tends to become flat and unmoving. It isn't until we bring in shadow, that our picture takes on a three dimensional feeling and appears to be a real person about to move off the piece of paper.

Here is easy methods to QUICKLY get good at this crucial subject of photography illumination methods.

First: Find yourself a model. Use a friend, relation or simply use the child next door.

Second: Sit them on a chair in a room that can be darkened. With all the light on, take a look at them. Examine their face. Understand how it looks? Now turn off the lights and allow it to be completely dark.

Third: Take a flashlight (an actual flashlight, not some studio light) and now have somebody hold it at about 45 degrees to the side and higher than your model.  Notice how the light lets us see our subject's face? (At least we could distinguish one side of it, nevertheless it is really the shadow that defines the shape!)

Fourth: Now use a reflector of some nature - maybe a bit of white paper or fabric - and have someone hold it on the opposite side of the face from your light.

Move it nearer and further away. See how the shadow varies? Study it, take notes. It is usually at this point - in the way in which education document the shadows - that separates the professionals from the wannabes.

Actually do this. In 15 or 20 minutes you'll learn more about photography lighting techniques and the way to place pizzazz in your pictures than you'll ever assume. Try it; your images will probably be eternally changed.
