Best choices for camera & equipment for a home photography studio? Any suggestions?

A lot of it depends on the size of the studio. A 300mm lens isn't gonna be very good for doing portraits; in a small room a 50mm lens may be too much for doing full-length portraits.

Quick shopping list:
- DSLR with appropriate lens
- Good tripod
- 3 to 5 lights including stands, soft-boxes, and wireless triggers
- Backdrop holder and backdrop(s) and/or seamless paper
- Something for subjects to sit on, whether they be objects or humans
