Planning on expanding my business and...?
have some questions from anyone who has relevant experience.
We, there are three of us, already have a growing photography studio doing weddings, portraits, you know the normal stuff. I, primarily, would like to expand in three areas.
1.) move from our existing location to a location that would offer more space so I could divide the two major parts of our business.
2.) Expand on the sale of novelty items (picture cups, plates, t-shirts, ext.). Our area is largely a resort/vacation area and I think it would do fairly well. The closest competitor is 60 miles away and we already have a majority of the equipment needed.
3.) have a portion of the new space for consignment sales of photographers work and used camera equipment.
The question is: How much percentage should one charge on consignment sales?
The one important thought is that you capitalize on your strengths - if you simply move into touristy novelties like everyone else, you can end up diluting what you are good at and your reputation at the same time. If it is a tourist town, I cant see how the photographers work and camera equipment will necessarily fly.
You could develop a couple hour photo training class so the tourists get the best of what they see - and then sell accessories as part of the course - hang super photos of the area around you.
I do believe that getting into new space before you know that you have a market and can profit from your new ideas is not wise in this market. Also, is your tourist business seasonal? Can you shift to something for off season?
Can you make arrangements to do photos for tour buses, boats, etc.? Can you offer a photo package for families visiting the areas...in other words, work to your strength.
I do believe that you need a bigger profit margin for the next step you take than from just novelties - and you might even do a market survey of tourists and give them something in return as you do it.
