What are my chances in this career?
I am a 16 girl and live in York, PA and I want nothing more than to work in Pittsburgh, PA as a sports writer for either a newspaper in Pittsburgh or primarily for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Steelers, or Pirates. (Preferably the Penguins, I LOVE HOCKEY!) What are my chances at these careers?
For experience I just completed my sophomore year of high school and was a sports writer for my school newspaper. I was also chosen by my journalism teacher as the sports columnist for my junior year and before my senior year I am going to apply for sports editor. Also this coming fall I have a student internship with ESPN. I am also going to see if I can get a student internship with the Hershey Bears since that is my local hockey team.
I am planning on going to Point Park University, which is in downtown Pittsburgh to major in journalism and minor in photography.
My husband used to work for FoxSports News, and it is a tough business, they had constant turn over and late nights.
As long as you are ok with that, and get the proper degrees I think there are a lot of places out there, especially in writing (as it can not be replaced with a computer system.)
You may want to pair your journalism major with a broadcasting minor, or english.
Good luck!
