Small Portable Photography Lights

small portable photography lights
help me on tips for lighting equipment!!!!!?

I am a beginning photographer in experience of having clients and doing shoots for others, but I do know photography. I would like to have you recommend studio lighting for me in brand, type (a set? what should be in the set? and a 2 piece or 3 piece?) and any other tips. Because I am starting out, have few clients bc my name isn't out there and I live in a small town where I doubt I'll be too busy (its a side job I'm going to use this for) I don't need the best brand, the best equipment, or the most expensive. I would like something that could be portable. I could even look into the equipment used.

So please what should I look for in new or used lighting? Keep in mind how much I'm going to use it and my experience as stated above. I don't know lighting at all so I need any details you can give me. So far I've just used natural indoor lighting for indoor shoots and the lamp light. Then I edit the picture on photoshop.

Calumet (http://www.calumetphoto.com) often has good deals on strobe kits that include a light, stand, and either an umbrella or softbox, sometimes both.

There are a lot of good books out there on lighting specifically, but some of them are really overkill. Scott Kelby's "The Digital Photography Book Volume 2" has a lot on lighting in it and some good ideas to give you a starter.

I've taken some lighting classes at a local photo school, but I've found the best experience is to get some lights and play around with them. Annoy your family and friends or just get a cable and do a lot of self-portraits, playing around with placement and such.

Generally I'd recommend at least two strobes set at 45 degree angles to your subject, at either different power levels or different distances so that there are some shadows on the face. Depending on your setup, you may need a backlight or a hair light (my hair light is an old hot shoe flash that has slave capabilities and I clamp it to the top of my backdrop frame).

Also, sometimes you can find good used equipment on craigslist.org.
