Minolta XG-A Camera...is it's value ever going up?
I have my fathers old Minolta XG-A, still in really good shape. Was considering selling it, but then saw that it's commonly available on places like ebay for next to nothing. There's also an online site (can't remember the URL off the top of my head) that will buy used photo equipment, they quoted me $5 for it.
Is this something that I should hold on to and expect it's value to increase, or just something that should be dumped into the next yard sale. It takes REALLY great pictures and I'd almost hate to see it go; but I hate having to use film when I can just pull out my digital and get my results for free.
Camera experts / collectors please reply!
It's unlikely to increase in value. There are plenty of film cameras available and the XG-A wasn't a particular standout from Minolta's lineup. Moreover, it uses a lens mount that is no longer in use, so it's valuable only to Minolta fanatics...a very small audience compared to the Nikon, Canon, and Pentax enthusiasts out there. Minolta no longer exists, and Sony seems to be doing what it can to make people think Sony rather than Minolta. I can't see this camera selling for more than $20 on eBay.
If you want the camera to actually be used, try contacting someone who teaches photography courses; they might have a student who needs a good camera cheaply and is willing to buy a 35mm film camera.
