Could I get some tips on getting started?
Hi there. I've been interested in capturing visuals and making them immortal for a long time now.
I am not interested in being a professional photographer, and I am not in a rush to master the art of photography. In my opinion, getting there is half the fun!
However, I know next to nothing about photography or cameras or film. I bought a book, "Photography for Dummies" that seems to explain the basics. I am having difficulty remembering what all the acronyms are though.
Do any photographers here have any tips on getting started?
How did you start?
What do you wish you had done differently?
What was the best way you mastered the skill?
What advice would you give a newbie?
1) Start by buying a decent camera (if you are going digital, I recommend Canon DSLRs, or Nikon, depending on your preference). This is how I started, but I also downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Lightroom. These two programmes are very important to me, as they make my photos as good as aesthetically pleasing as they are.
2)If there's anything I wish I had done differently, I would be to A) not take stereotypical, boring pictures, ie-flowers, my own garden, things in my house, and try to pass them off as good. And B) I would have immediately learnt to use my camera manually, rather than just having it on the 'Auto' setting constantly.
3) The best way to master the skill is to carry your camera with you very often, and take pictures regularly ON MANUAL SETTING!
4) My advice to a newbie would be to ONLY use the best images that they capture, don't decrease the standard by showing people all of your pictures including the bad ones.
