For all the pro photographers here: How are you doing with your expensive gear while flying to/from/within US?

I was always encouraged by the airlines to fly with my photo equipment on me. One lost bag could cost easily $10.000 so what are you guys doing when traveling to/from/within US? Do you had bad experience with your checked equipment since the Christmas 2009?

Lifehacker just posted a great tip... Pack a STARTER PISTOL with your gear. Starer Pistol needs no licnese, and you don't need to buy any ammo. Just declare it when you check in. They'll call a TSA guy over to verify it is unloaded, and no ammo in the whole thing (hand-search), then he'll let YOU lock it (with a REAL lock, not those with TSA overrides), then it goes through special handling, and thus, it will NOT get lost. It would NOT look good for the TSA or the airline to lose a "weapon" shipment.
