professional camera equipment reviews
Question for professional photographers: How did you get started in photography? More....?

I have been bitten by the "photography" bug and have been thinking about doing it professionally on the side. Since I have no formal training whatsoever, I'm looking into taking photography classes. In the meantime, what is a good book and/or websites to get familiar with equipment, camera functions, etc. Also, I have read great reviews of the Canon Rebel XT. Is this a good beginner's camera? Can I take professional quality pics with it? Any info & advice is greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks for your valuable answers!!! I really appreciate it!

You can take professional pictures with a point-and-shoot. Well, almost. I keep one on hand to take pictures of my setup on a shoot.

I've been doing photography as a hobby for many years. I got into professional (getting paid for it) because I was disgusted with the quality (low) and the price (high) for my daughter's school pictures. So I started taking them. Then others wanted to know where we'd gotten those pictures done, so they asked me to take shots of their kids..... Kinda snowballed from there.

You may want to see if there are any photography schools or colleges with photography classes in your area and see if they offer workshops on lighting. Could help a lot. There are a lot of books out there, too, but hands-on experience and pressing that shutter button a lot are a lot better educators.
