Lighting kits for photographers?

I want to get a lighting kit so I can take my photography to the next level. I love how smooth it makes pictures look. How much is an average lighting kit? I don't want top of the line product, but I don't want something crappy either... Does anyone know what a good product/brand is?

Go for at least 2 lights system. More power = more options and flexibility. But if you want to shoot 1 or 2 persons at a time, about 200 TOTAL watts system is good enough as starter.

About the tungsten lights. They are cheaper to start, OR so it seems. But the light bulbs do NOT burn for very long (something like 50 hours), and are extremely sensitive to motion if they are ON and moved (they easily blow). And if they are bright, in summers they make the room very hot. So choose carefully. That is why long time pro eventually always end up with strobes (flash).
