What would be some fair prices to charge for wedding photography?
I have started charging for my photography recently. While my prices are low, I also would like to keep up with recent pricing of things. I shot my first wedding a few months ago and only charged 450 to really treat it as a experience. The pictures came out great and everyone loved them! There is another self-taught photographer in the area that charges fairly high for her quality (in mine and several others opinion). I was wondering what would seem to be fair prices to go from and package types. I am only offering CDs of the edited images and photobooks at this time. But I wanted to know what packages I could set up with my time and fair pricing.
I have been a professional wedding photographer for 10 years.
When you try to get more clients by offering a lower rate, you will be doomed to fail. Every time a new photographer comes in, they end up charging a little less, and the result is a downward spiral. You end up fighting over the clients that want to pay the least amount possible.
Instead, you should wait until you have an impeccable portfolio, even if that means going out and putting models in wedding dresses to build it. Then you can go after the higher end clients.
In my market, the average price for a photographer is about $1500. My packages range between $2,500 and $10,900. I have only been shooting weddings in this area for 5 years, and not only am I the most expensive, I also book more weddings than any of my competition.
While they fight over the clients who are looking for the cheapest photographer in the area, I can cater to the high end clients.
