In your opinion, which is more difficult video or still photography?
I have a background in video, analog video. I have a degree in Television Production and when I worked in the industry everything was analog and I have very little experience with digital video. I am very interested in learning more about digital still photography. Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice in this? Also, any suggestions on a good camera for a beginner? Thanks in advance.
To me, it's video. I am horrible at it. Everything has to be planned out and editing afterward is time consuming.
This reminds me of an interesting story. I was asked to take photos for a restaurant (for their menu). (This is an example of a recent one, but not from the story I am telling you now http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/3851561294/ ) The owner's son just graduated with a degree in cinematography and he was given the job and the poor kid wasn't able to get these still photos correctly.
I looked at his photos and realized that the aperture setting was at f 2.8 (he used Canon 100 mm f 2.8 lens)--so basically the depth of field was paper-thin. At that time, Photoshop did not have "Extended depth of field" feature (that can be done automatically anyway), so his photos had just a tip of each dish in focus and he simply did not know why (and thus I was there).
I was trying to explain to him the reason, but he said (like a true cinematographer) that there wasn't enough light for fast enough shutter speed. I reminded him that it was a still shot and his camera was on a tripod-so if it had taken a second exposure, it would be okay. I think he was terribly embarrassed by it but we spoke quietly and I didn't want to make him look badly in front of his mother (who must have paid dearly for his school).
So while I think technical aspects of video / film are not the same, they are similar in many ways. If you were to take lessons in still photography, I am sure you have a good background for it already.
Camera? I think any dSLR will do fine. You can put them in manual mode in any way you'd like. No need for anything expensive now.
I think this is too basic but it's not a bad start (and free, too) http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=317/10032&pq-locale=en_US
