Help me with photography studio lighting please?

I understand a softbox or white umbrella is needed to create soft light for the model, but what kind of light(s) would you need to light up a backdrop, and how would you use it/them?

Like bluespeed I use 2x studio lights with spill kills behind the model aimed at the backdrop (& slightly feathered to avoid a hotspot).

If you're limited by the number of lights you have, you can light the backdrop with a large umbrella aimed so it part lights the model and the backdrop (you feather the light off the model). There is also a method whereby you have the key light at high enough power to blow out the backdrop, but you use a diffusion panel (scrim) to drop the light ON the model by a stop or so to avoid over exposure.

To get a white b/g you need to light it about 2 stops higher than the subject. If you light it more than this, you get background 'bleed', where the light bounces back onto the rear of the model & starts to affect the edges (some people like this effect though).
