I am looking to buy an affordable but good quality lighting kit. What would be your recommendation?

I have looked into alot of lighting kits and reviews but still am questioning my choices. The reviews say that Cow boy Studios have cheaply made kits. I have $500 to spend, but no more. What kit and brand would you recommend? I am an amature photographer, training myself. I would use this for studio portraits after mastering the usage of it. I have been in demand, but have been limited to outside portraiture and would like to take my photography to a new level.
