What could i get for $1000?

I want to set up a little photography studio in my house. I am just an amature but i want my equipment to good because i don't plan on being an amature forever. All I have right now is my Digital Canon Rebel XT so i need lighting backdrops and so on. I only have 1000 dollars though.

I agree with the Alien Bees suggestion. If you are enrolled in a class, you can also get a student discount there. My recommendation for a starting kit:

2 B800 lights at 280 each: $560
2 stands: $55
2 large softboxes: $260

If you can afford a little more, add:
- 1 B400 light (backlight option): $225
- 1 extra lightstand:$25
- some sort of backdrop kit from Adorama, B&H, or eBay.
- portrait lenses (~50mm)
- handheld incidental (flash) meter
