photography challenge?

does anyone know how to take a picture of a christmas ornament/s (the round, highly reflective kind) without getting yourself, the flash, or the camera in the picture? i was told it has something to do with the "family of angles"

Pros will use a light table setup, but here's an alternative method. Set the camera on a tripod. Cut a hole in the center of a white sheet that will just barely fit loosely over the lens. Use your camera's pop-up flash or an off camera flash and shoot it thru the sheet to diffuse the light. You may have to crank up the power of the flash if your camera allows you to do so to compensate for the diffusing (reducing) qualities of the sheet material.

Use a cable or electronic flash to avoid vibration when shooting. If you don't have one of those, you can use the self-timer function if it's available on your camera. Get a friend to help you hold the sheet up (from behind of course), and be careful not to pull it too high and lift the tripod & camera off the ground.

You will want to experiment. Even if the first one looks good, adjust the flash output or the shutter speed or the aperture. Take a bunch of pictures, and then take your time selecting the one you like best. Be sure to start a journal to record your "lessons learned". Most of all, enjoy the time you spend shooting the ornament.
