South West France – A Holiday Destination For The Bon Viveur

In South West France, the Dordogne is the one of the best known departements. A quaint district, dotted with medieval forts and castles, named after the Dordogne River, a peaceful, meandering river that connects with the Gironde River near Bordeaux and ultimately flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Just as eye-catching for utter natural beauty is the Gers, a Gascon region, which is south toward the Pyrenees. The Dordogne countryside and its close by départments is especially attractive and in the main natural, which makes the area especially pleasing to tourists accustomed to the abundant foliage of the English countryside, or the rolling meadows and cottages of New England and Middle Atlantic States. There are a number of arrays of accommodation from B&B and small hotels to caravan parks and campsites Dordogne provides an assortment to suit all budgets and tastes.

Outdoorsy people will find Southwest France a vacation paradise as a consequence of the excellent prospects it gives for camping, swimming, canoeing and fishing. For history and photography fans the locale is rich in historica and scenic attractions, including close to a thousand ancient castles. Amongst Dordogne’s most visited tourist attractions are the outstanding pre-history caverns of Lascaux, as well as Perigueux Roman ruins.

The most magnificent and picturesque region in France, the Lot department, including the Lot and Dordogne river valleys is a treasure of forests, valleys and hills. The castles include the last medieval castle built in France, Chateu de Bonaguil.

A tranquil position for your caravanning holiday, you'll see many of the Bastide towns of France – which are medieval towns built on a lattice scheme that still remains to this day – including Domme, Eymet, Monpazier, Monflanquin, Villareal and Sarlat, the Dordogne’s ‘medieval capital’.

On the outskirts of St Cybranet is the Bel Ombrage caravan site, in a beautifully wood location in the brilliant Dordogne area. Sited near Sarlat, the caravan site itself has 3 swimming pools with a waterslide; children’s play areas and games room. Stroll around the medieval and renaissance town of Sarlat with its yellow sandstone buildings and check out the appetizing local cuisine, such as Armagnac and wines and truffles with pate de foie gras.
