Are Smith Victor strobes any good?
I've been looking around at lighting for about 6 months now and haven't settled on anything mostly because the units that are within affordable range have bad reviews or don't meet my requirements. I'm very new to studio photography so i'm very much in the dark.
I recently found an affordable, and seemingly good starter kit of two monolights that are within my budget. They are Smith Victors and i've had trouble finding good information on this brand online. Anybody have experience with this brand? Would it be a good setup for a beginner?

Smith Victor is a very well established studio equipment manufacturer and distributor. They have an excellent reputation for quality/dollar. They have manufactured/distributed continuous lighting AND electronic strobe units for at least the past 50 years. Many of their electronic flash units use replaceable flash tubes but I suspect that the ones you have found are basic low output units that will work for a very small studio, probably similar to this ~

When I began setting up a studio I got SV equipment because it was affordable and decent quality. The good thing is that they make very standard components so you can upgrade equipment as you can afford to (and learn what your needs are) with individual replacement units.
Alien Bees has a very good reputation for affordable strobe units but they are still considerably more than the Basic SV equipment.
