How do I become self-sufficient?
I am married with 2 kids and we need the extra money. I want to eventually get on a full-time course to do photography. My husband is dead against me EVER going to uni and currently the only jobs I am qualified to do are administration, sales assistants or light picking and packing and if I do ANY of those I will quite possibly head for my daddy's shotgun! (just a joke lol!)
I won't comment on what I think of your husband's attitude towards your self improvement. Guess I just did. Oops.
If you want to be practical, I recommend trying your hand at photography without the education. I have a good friend who was kind of a natural at taking certain types of photos- families at the beach, couples, babies, real Hallmark stuff, not my thing at all. But again, practical. She started taking photos for a few friends, they told a few friends and so on. Now she's got a nice little small business going.
Another friend did the same with graphic design, he just learned it all himself. Most employers are MORE impressed by him than someone with a degree.
If you can manage to get past your husband, and come up with the money for a full time photography education, it will still be a long time before you pay off that education and see any profit coming from your work. So maybe try to go the route of my friend. Get yourself a decent camera and start practicing. Developing photos in a lab is all but dead anyway. Take a class or two at a community college and learn the rest by experience. Nobody at a photography expo has their BA sitting on the wall by their work. The work speaks for itself.
University education is overpriced and overrated, especially if you'll spend more years paying it back than you did studying. Just ask Bill Gates, he'll tell you the same.
