Art Institutes and other good art schools?
I want to go to college for either photography or graphic design, or possibly something that has to do with commercial/advertising. I'm not 100% sure yet. I was really interested in the Art Institutes, but I've been hearing pretty bad things about them. Can anybody please give me any information on these schools? I was looking into AIB but now I'm not so sure. Also, if you know about any other art schools with good photography or design programs in Boston, that would be great.
Oh and I'm wondering what's the percentage or applicants who get accepted into these schools, and how many graduates have jobs right after college? Thanks
I also asked this in higher education, I really want a variety of answers
The Art Institutes actually have a pretty good reputation in the industry. Yes, all they want is your money. This is true of any school you attend, public or private. But they do a good job of pretending to care if you show them you actually care... better than the people at public schools.
The Art Institutes also do a pretty good job of preparing you for the industry, as well as actually teaching the job. They help you write your resume, offer internships, and have an entire class (which is required) that helps you get your professional portfolio in order. I have bachelor's degree in visual arts from a state university. No one at that school ever helped me with my portfolio, or bothered to teach me how to write a resume... and no one ever even mentioned an internship. I searched for a job related to my degree for three years, and ended up waiting tables. So I enrolled at AIP in 2006 and got my associate's in web design and interactive media. I found a job within three months of graduating.
You won't get a job as a graphic designer or photographer right out of school, no matter where you go to school. These jobs are not in high demand. In fact, many of my graphic designer friends are going back to school to get web design degrees because there is no work. Photographers have the same problem... there just isn't enough work for everyone. If you want to go to the Art Institute, I strongly advise that you major in game design, web design, or culinary. You are much more likely to get a job shortly after you graduate with one of these degrees.
A lot of people will say negative things about the Art Institutes because they enrolled expecting it to be easy and then flunked out. It is NOT easy. The course programs are accelerated, and it is a lot of work. People get angry when they can't keep up and the school won't accept their excuses. So they tell all their friends that the Art Institute is a bad school that just wants your money. Yes, they just want your money. But unlike public schools, they actually have to earn it, which forces them to be a good school.
