what is it with old photography and men putting their hands in their jackets?
ok, I noticed that in a lot of old photos and portraits, men tend to put their hands in their jackets. Does this mean something?

Yes. There is a very simple reason for doing that. The exposures were so long in the early days of photography, many minutes, even longer that in order not to blur the image you had to remain still. So the expressions were somber, even lifeless. Putting a hand in the jacket helped steady it for a crisp image.
