Photographers (liabilitys, costs, insurance) ?
Photography is myhoby at the moment but i have decided to take it further and persue i as a part time job, but i am just wondering what liabilities, costs and inurance should be added to the job cost.
If you could base it on portraitures it'd be muc appretiated.
If im not explaining it very well, i mean, what other costs should be added to the job to make the final job cost total (the price i would charge my client).
thanks
How much should you charge?
You need to sit down and write down all the outgoings and costs over a decent time period such as a year. This should include all the obvious stuff such as film, developing costs (if you're still analogue), petrol and so on, and also the non obvious stuff. How long do you think your equipment will last? You need to include an amount for wear and tear, because eventually it'll need replacing. You also need to factor in lunch money, mobile phone bills etc. Everything single little thing involved in your business. Now simply divide it by how many jobs you think you will get in a year. This gives you your average cost baseline per job. If you want to actually make money, you need to charge more than this amount for an average job.
Liabilities.
How much damage do you think you can realistically do, if you were the most stupid, clumsy person ever, and what are the risks? I would say you are probably not going to be putting anybody at any serious risk above tripping over tripods etc. provided you are not making people pose half way up a mountain or something, so generally you should be quite a low risk. You should also be aware of fire exits and safety procedures at other premises. For in depth information you could always visit hse.gov.uk for advice about working away.
Insurance
Public liability isn't legally required, although some clients or studios may insist you have it for a job, and besides, it's just a very good idea to have this cover as a bare minimum. Towergate have a scheme called "Camersure" which will provide you with this, and will also offer options for covering your equipment, and anything else you might need as a photograspher. We normally recommend this policy because it is specifically set up for photographers with levels from hobbyist to semi, and full professional. http://www.towergatecamerasure.co.uk/
Will general liability cover injuries to photographers on set?
