What was happening before photography changed history?

I mean't....
What did photography do to change history? or like How has photography affected what's going on today?
For one example embedded journalist were credited with bring the Vietnam war into American's homes by putting the images from the ground on TV and newspapers. That changed peoples perceptions of war. So much so that there was a ban that made it illegal to show caskets of American soldiers, much less anything else.
There is the tier-ificatoion of celebrity. In the 50's you saw your favorite star in the magazines when they sat down for a shoot with someone. Now the paparazzi get us photos of them bending over in bikinis. I like to say they are not people, they are celebrities.
Photography is a tool of propaganda.
The images we are exposed to change our perceptions of things and therefore change our reactions and therefore change the world. The rat picture affected the psyche of "The clean German," The boys shooting out of helicopters in the Vietnam war, the lady covered in dust in the streets of NY; if we didn't have images we would never know what was going on for real. If that happened we would have to rely on the truth.
(That last line means that all photography is propaganda in some way. Whether it helps your cause or fights it is another story.)
