Art Students Should Have No Problem Finding A Scholarship For College

The days of an artist slaving and starving away in some decrepit grotto just isn’t what it used to be.  In fact, the exponential growth of computers and the internet has caused the need for more graphic and visual artists than ever before, creating a niche in the art world.  Most importantly, there is an acute need for animators and multimedia artists who can easily apply their knowledge over all manners of electronic media.

Art students benefit from a number of philanthropic organizations that are eager to help fund their college educations.  Providing grants and scholarships for Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degrees is the objective of these organizations.  Students who also obtain state and financial aid can significantly cut down the cost of their tuition. One good example is Chicago’s Union League Civic & Arts Foundation.  Each year, it hands out $34,000 in scholarship money.  The prizes are divided into two main categories, Photography Only and Excluding Photography.  The top award is at least $5,000.  There is also a second place ($4,000) and third place ($3,000), as well as awards of $1,000.  To apply, the contestant must be under 30 and attending a recognized school.

Underprivileged students of the commercial arts, architecture, or design can apply for the Worldstudio AIGA Scholarship.  They need a 2.0 GPA or higher.  On average, a student can collect between $2,000 and $3,000.  Awards of $5,000 each are also distributed by Grand Jury.  An honorary student can even earn an extra $500 in cash. On a more regional basis, there’s the Wendy Jackson Hall Memorial Scholarship.  This program is open to students who live in the state of Washington and are graduating from a local high school with at least a GPA of 3.0.  The award is $10,000 for two years and can be applied to the tuition of any school in the U.S.

Another on the smaller scale is the Liberty Graphics Arts Scholarship.  It awards $1,000 towards some form of visual art with a strong environmental theme.  It is only open to students living and going to school in Maine. Students should research online scholarships and see all the opportunities available to them.

Students can also qualify for awards for their work that is unrelated to their academics.  The Carole Fielding Student Grant, created by the University Video and Film Association, financially supports projects that are for TV or film.  A well-known college professor must sponsor a project.  Narrative, documentary, experimental, animation, multimedia, or research is the groups that one can choose to focus his or her project on.  A $4,000 grant is awarded to the winner.  Research-related projects receive $1,000 awards.  Projects such as these are an excellent asset to any art student's resume.

One other important lesson to learn about a career in the visual arts is that a majority of projects in the field are freelance.  So, learning to apply for these grants is good training for what being a professional is all about.  Learn how to get these grants and getting financing in the real world becomes a lot easier.
