Seek cross eye coaching for dummies?

In the book "a Grain of Sand" with micro photography, there are some double pictures, which I am supposed to watch while crossing my eyes to catch the 3D effect. Ok, I can roll my tongue, but attempting to cross my eyes makes me dizzy only. I feel REALLY dumb (as in: Is this book an elaborate April's fools joke?), so please: Who can coach me how to successfully watch 3D without motion. (I prefer not to use the rather permanent version of some Native Americans who once upon a time conditioned their kids by fixing something to their hair hanging in front of the nose...)

It took me a while to be able to do these, too. The trick is not trying to hard. If you cross your eyes severely, you get a headache, and they will want to snap back into position from the strain.

Look at something other than the pictures--a pen is good. Let your eye muscles relax until you see two separate pens. It should be easy to keep them in this position, seeing two pens, for a fairly long time, like a minute. If it hurts, you are pushing them too hard; try to relax.

Then, very gently and slowly take control of the muscles and pull your eyes back into position so you are only seeing one pen. Do this a few times, working on being able to move the two images of the pens a little closer together, and then stopping them for a few seconds.

Then try the pictures. Relax your eyes until you see separate images, then slowly move them together. It will actually be easier than the pens, because as you let the pictures move together, your brain will recognize objects in the picture. The moment you feel like there is something recognizable in the image, even if you can't say what it is, stop the movement and start slowing looking around the picture. Your brain will try to make sense of the rest of the picture around that piece it caught earlier.

Once your brain recognizes the full picture, you will be able to look at it in 3d and move your gaze around in it without losing the 3d image. You won't even notice your eyes are crossed.
