Help: Instructional Product Photography (products with hands)?
I originally intended to do my own DIY light box (looking at the other threads). Thing is, I need some of the photos to have hand activity with the product - in my case, film cameras doing activities like loading/winding film for work and a bounding box will hinder the hand activity.
I was wondering, what could be the nearest solution to take somewhat 'instructional' photographs on a clear background and ample 'DIY' lights?
I've been trying to google an exact search string for 'instructional photography' but couldn't get a hit. Was wondering if anyone could help with any FAQ lying around, or which items (light wattage, etc.) to purchase. Thanks heaps!
It would be something akin to the photo below (but definitely more refined):

A light box is great for product photography, but, for several reasons, it's not what you need for what you want to do. Try this:
Go to a building supply store and get 2 pieces of the insulation board with the silvered side. They are 4' x 8, I think. Tape them together with duct tape along the long side. This will give you what is called a book end, or a V Reflector.
Get some RipStop nylon, white, uncoated, full width and 10' long.
Get a construction light with adjustable height that has two lights, which will give you a choice between 1000 watts (both lights) and 500 watts (one light).
Get some 'A' clamps, about 6 should do.
Using the silvered side of the V Reflector/Bookend, place the lights within the V facing the silvered sides and place the RipStop nylon over the open part of the V and clamp it into place.
Turn on the lights, and don't let them touch the nylon - the lights get hot. At a 90 degree angle, you will get a very soft light that you can then modify with bounce fills (sheets, foam core board) and other techniques. By adusting the angle of the V, the distance of the lights from the subject, whether the lights face the into the reflector or face the nylon and the height of the lights within the reflector, you have a very flexible lighting system.
You can also use natural light from a window. If the sun is coming directly through the window, throw a white sheet over it and use bounce fill to get the lighting you want. If the light is indirect you can forget the sheet.
You can use that setup to shoot a wide range of subjects, from portraits to your instructional shots.
