Photography - why is my depth of field so much greater with one lense than another?
I have two lenses, 50mm f/1.4 and 35-70mm f/4 that I use on my Cannon 20d.
The depth of field is so much greater using my 35-70. My question is why? It seems that no matter what f stop I used on my 50, its focus is sharp but shallow.
it's the lens itself. the smaller F-stop( lower number means larger aperture, which also means it is a "faster" lens) , the shallower or more dof you'll get.
a faster lens is always more expensive to make. So you 50mm at it's largest aperture of f1.4 will give you a lot shallower Dof than the 35-70 zoom, which largest aperture if f/3.5
