How to Photograph Motor Sport
With the final races of the 2010 Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi just days away, many photographers have taken an avid interest in photographing motorsports. However, capturing high speed motorsport action can be challenging even to an experienced photographer because of the unpredictability and high velocity of car racing. Whether you are on your way to Abu Dhabi or another motorsports event, these tips from Red & Gold Photography will help you formulate the creative approach that you will need to capture stunning motorsport photos.
Motion-Blur Technique
The Starting Flag
The starter waving the checkered flag makes for a unique photo. As the race begins, the cars will be moving slowly and the motion blur of the flag gives the photograph added interest. Use a slow shutter speed of 1/30 and the cars and the flag will have motion streaks.
During the Race
Many photographers in other sports work hard at choosing shutter speeds to remove any trace of motion blur. In motorsport photography, some blurring of the subject is acceptable. Set your shutter speed anywhere from 1/30 of a second to 1/8 of a second to give the cars motion streaks.
Pit Stops
An excellent use of the motion-blur technique is at pit stops. Set your shutter speed to 1/8 of a second and the car will be in sharp focus, but the pit crew workers will have motion streaks, showing has swiftly they work.
Composition
The highest quality motorsport photos of moving cars are usually a three-quarter front view, as this adds depth and shows more of the car. To capture a photo of stopped cars, you can either take a photo of the cars lined up at the starting line or at a pit stop.
