Using red lights for night time wildlife photography
I want to do some night time wildlife photography and red light is the most acceptable color that won't scare the animals.
Can I use a gray card to set the white balance on my camera for this? I use a sony H9.
If you are shooting using IR film ... sure. Red lights help both the hunter and game from getting "night blindness". When using red light, there is no need to do any white balance, since there is no blue or green light being projected on the animal The gray card is for exposure only. You will need a colour chart to be able to later attempt to colour balance your image, but since only red light is being used, there is on way to introduce any blue or green into the image.
