is it safe in new york city for carrying around cameras?
I'm going to NYC this weekend, and I want to take lots of pictures, especially night shots for my photography class. But, my mom is convinced if I carry around my camera, even in a bag, I'll get mugged. I'm 15, and I'm going with my mom. So, my question is, is New York safe for carrying around a $1500 camera?
And another question, what are some good camera stores in the city, and where are they located?
Thanks.
New York is just about the safest large city in this country. I frequently walk around this city with my camera, and have never come close to having a problem. Just use common sense. I have actually used the subways to carry bags containing TV cameras costing well more than that. Don't worry about it, but again, use common sense. Keep it where you can see it. Don't carry it in a backpack, where someone can sneak up behind you and take it out.
Muggings are simply not as common as you think. I have never been a victim of one, and I have actually never even seen one.
B&H Photo and Video, on 33rd Street and 9th Avenue, is just about the best camera store you'll find anywhere. Their prices are also surprisingly good, about the best you'll see anywhere. Honestly, you can get just about anything there. Check their website:
