LOOKING FOR THAT PERFECT PORTRAIT? TRY THESE IDEAS
British politician, Tony Benn, said : 'photography is a moment of embarassment and a lifetime of pleasure.’
Whether you agree with his sentiment or not, the fact is that photography is integral to our daily lives.Take the the time to think of how often you come across photos in a day - advertising, magazines, newspapers, billboards, on TV etc - and it becomes apparent how wide their influence is.
Portrait photography is obviously a much less commercial form of the art, but nonetheless a very important one.Portraits aren't only being taken for record-keeping but are a growing form of art.
Portraits are commissioned for a variety of reasons from gifts to mementos of a special occasion, celebration of a milestone or just to capture a moment. Some clients know exactly what they want and the photographer will be guided by that.Other clients are happier letting the photographer's experience and talent take over and dictate the shot.
These suggestions from leading Perth portrait studio, Freedom Photography, may be useful.
There are lots of tried and tested rules - but they need to be broken. From composition, perspective, lighting and props to staging – it’s a free world.Sometimes, getting that amazing shot will result from 'out of the box' thinking.
Some ideas :
• The conventional perspective is to have the camera at eye level.Mix it up.Get down low and shoot upwards or get high and look down for really interesting views.
• Use props to create additional points of interest.A child with a toy, athlete with sports equipment, a woman with a rose...these can all attract the viewer's attention, but can also detract from the main subject.
* Use conventional wisdom and then push the envelope. Having the subject at the outer edge of the shot can be really interesting.
* Play around with lighting from the side and the back, and think of shadows and silhouettes.
• Change focus.Sometimes focusing in closely on one particular part of the body, such as the eyes, can be very striking.
* Eyes give away a great depth of emotion. The eyes do show emotion and it can be tempting to have the subject looking directly towards the camera.Sometimes, it's far more interesting to have the subject look to the side, leaving the viewer wondering what's attracted their attention.
* Give a smile - you're on candid camera!A natural expression is often best, but explore other moods, eg thoughtful, reflective.
* Movement also works well. This works particularly well in candid shoots, such as kids playing outside. The movement can result in a picture that has more energy and character.
The trick is to shoot quickly and shoot often, because crafting that one perfect portrait is a real art. It’s the old story – the harder you practice, the luckier you’ll get, and regardless of whether you’re a top athlete or an amateur photographer – it’s true.As Perth portrait photography studio, Freedom Photography readily admits, they've been practising their craft for years and learning new things every day. Practice makes perfect.
