SLR Digital Camera Tips 6-10
6. Using Automatic mode
Knowing when to use automatic mode is important to getting quality pictures. This is more or less the fully automatic mode of your camera, where it sets the aperture and shutter speed for you depending on what you're shooting.
When looking at the P, A, S, and M settings, P stands for program mode. You may want to use an automatic setting when the scene changes rapidly, and you don't have time to manually adjust your camera for the shot.
This might be in a busy city environment, or if your shooting something unpredictable, like wildlife or fast moving children.
7. Take Lots Of Photos- You Have A SLR Digital Camera!
This is one of the truly beautiful thing of having a SLR digital camera. Gone are the days when you needed to develop to see exactly how the picture turned out. I shoot like crazy, and I encourage you to do the same.
As a rule, when you shoot something, take 5 or 6 pictures of the exact same thing. That way, you can choose the one you like best and discard the rest. Don't feel bad about throwing out the majority of the pictures you take, that's what most good photographers do. Make sure you're using a good camera. One of the ones I like to use best is the Rebel T3i from Canon.
Shooting like crazy will ensure you never come back from any event or outing with room left on your memory cards, and this is a good thing. Go through your pics, and you'll usually be surprised by some of the great shots you managed to get!
8. Change your perspective
Photography is an art, and as with all art, you should always be on the lookout to create something even better. Don't just settle into a static routine for taking pictures. Whenever you're ready for your shot, stop and consider other perspectives.
Is there someplace higher you can take the picture from? Can you get down on the ground for a truly unique shot? What if you tilt your camera slightly on an angle? As an experiment I encourage you to take your next few days of shots from 4 or 5 different perspectives. A slr digital camera is a highly versatile machine- take advantage of it!
Then go home and examine what some of the new perspectives you may not have originally thought of did for your pictures. We can come out with some truly unique photos when we stay creative and think outside the box.
9. Don't forget about White Balance
This is more for those of you that are shooting JPEG (which most of you are). If shooting in the RAW, white balance is something that can be set during post processing.
Most any SLR digital camera you use will let you set the white balance, and this is a feature you'll want to use quite often. The white balance setting tells the camera which intensity/colors to see as highlights. If you're shooting indoors for example, you can set the white balance to "artificial mode".
This informs the SLR digital camera that you're shooting in artificial light, and it adjusts accordingly. The end result is pictures that look as if they were shot in daylight, without even having to use a flash.

10. Keep things simple
One of the biggest mistakes new photographers make is trying to capture everything at once. When using a SLR digital camera, your best bet is shooting a simple subject. I don't know how many times I've seen a photo ruined because too much was included in it.
There needs to be a clear focus point. That being said, avoid shooting crowds or busy settings. There's usually just too much going on, and the pictures usually come out looking uninteresting.
Try and mentally note a clear image you want to come across with your picture, and shoot for that. That will usually ensure you're taking pictures that have some focus and simplicity to them.
