Choosing photography software
Since the introduction of the digital cameras, camera software has all but replaced the chemical process, so much so that the computer is often referred to as a photographers' digital darkroom. Photo editing software has become the next most important tool in the photographers' toolbox, behind only their camera equipment, and in some cases more important. The number of different editing packages are overwhelming, and take many different forms, some are packaged together, and are known as Editing Suites, others come separately, often referred to as stand alone devices, and they cover everything you could possibly want to achieve in your post treatment.
What photographic software do you need? I hear you ask, well that is a bit of a difficult one to answer. If you take photographs in the RAW format, the first bit of camera software you will require is a RAW processor or RAW converter, like Adobe Camera RAW or Lightroom (the leading software in this field) or one of the multitudes of other packages, many DSLR manufacturers package their cameras with a RAW editor. This handy piece of software allows the tweaking of white balances or correction of some exposures; this is what makes shooting in RAW great.
When you have completed the processing of your RAW file, to your desired style, you will usually use another photo editing package, such as Photoshop the current market leader or GIMP, possibly the best known free editing software, but there are many, many more, including some that are online editors, a tool that comes in handy if you are out and have no access to your usual software. These packages are best for altering further, adding layers, adjusting levels or sharpening, among others.
Once you have mastered the use of these pieces of camera software, there are extra pieces you can add to you darkroom; plug-ins, filters or further software, like noise reduction software or DVD creating packages, or even items that allow many other techniques to be achieved such as portrait professional a piece of kit that will allow portraits to be airbrushed in a professional manner. The best way to know what you need is to try some out and free trials are often available; alternatively read the details of what the software does, and go from there. There are tutorials and tips on some of the software on the fatphotographer how to post process page if you need any more help.
