As a photographer becoming self employed and starting a photography business, do I need a business name?
I'm a photography graduate, looking into starting my own business, so I can take jobs, pay taxes etc. etc.
But is it best to just call the business "my name photography" or come up with some other name, since I'm only one person.
What is the standard business practice? I see a lot of photographer web pages offering services, but is that separate than their actual company? Does it pay to come up with a name for the business instead?
Since you are a single person most people will get to know you personally so it makes sense to go by "Joey Photography", "JG Photography" or (If Goodwill is your lastname) go by "Goodwill Photography".
Report it in your taxes as a home business using your own SSN.
It will be different if you have a Studio, then you can come up with a name for the Studio such as "Joey's Corner". In any case, you will probably need a web site to post your work and allow people to order online so you get a domain name such as www.joeyg.com, www.joeyphotography.com, www.goodwill.com, www.goodwillphotography.com or if you are a 'local' photographer some name that people will find easy to relate to you.
I use www.kntmendoza.net and I host it at www.2mhost.com and use the EOS system for people to place their orders and report it as a home business using my SSN since I have no studio
Good luck!
