Best DSLR camera for an interested beginner?

This is my last summer as a senior in high school, then it's off to college and away from my lifelong friends. I would love to document it in an artistic way by the means of photography. I have determined that Nikon, Canon, and Sony are the most popular brands. What would you recommend for me to get started in DSLR photography? Also what lens will give me the best overall performance for the money? I don't need any mega zoom, just some lenses that allow the subject to be in focus, and the rest to be out of focus. (I dont know what to call that). Thanks!

the subject in focus and rest out of focus is called Depth of Field (DoF). That depends on how fast the lens.

here are the entry level models from Canon and Nikon. Sony is good, but they don't have nearly the support that Nikon and canon have. Along with that, if you ever wanted to upgrade, there really aren't any to upgrade to.

Nikon D3000, D5000, D3100, D5100
Canon Xs, T3, T1i, T2i, T3i

if you want to do nice portraits and whatnot, also look at getting a 50mm f/1.8 (or f/1.4 if money allows). This lens is fast, and will provide a very shallow DoF
