what has digital photography done to us?
I need some sources to find out about the goods and bads about digital photography and compare it to analogue photography and old ways of photography... like articles about this issue.. Its a university homework!.. Please help me if you know anything...
@pawpoint: If you know what you're doing, you know how the film is going to turn out when you expose it. You don't have to wait until you see it. That's what training is about.
Digital has made us less critical of imagery: as a culture we tend to ignore bad technique more easily. We tend to ignore the image as well, because we see literally billions of them in a lifetime now. It has also given us an expectation of quicker turnaround - people think digital takes less time than film, and for the most part it does.
I find digital does not look as good as film, the colors are not as saturated and the hues as varied, but this could be my camera, not digital in and of itself. It also does not have the dynamic range film does (soon, very soon it will even on low end cameras.)
I agree it has made us lazy. I recently took a trip on which I decided to shoot film rather than digital. Because I had only 36 exposures per roll and only 20 rolls of a specific variety of film I sure did pull out my handheld meter and checked the range in my scene. I knew what the picture would look like then: where the shadows, midtones and highlights would fall, and what the planned development process would do to the film. When using my digital camera, I just shot, looked at the histogram, reshot according to those results. I didn't worry anywhere near as much.
I think the real difference is people respected photography and photographs more when they were done in film because the perception that "anyone can do this" was not nearly as prevalent. It was perceived at least as a craft requiring great skill. Now people think they can buy a digital camera and Presto! they are professional photographers capable of shooting weddings, advertising and fashion with no training at all. Digital cheapened the perception of photographs - why pay anything for something when there are a billion of them out there. Ruined the stock business, that's for sure.
