Amatuer sports photography?

I am wanting to buy a digital camera to take pics of my kids sporting events (usually outdoor sports) I dont want to drain the bank account to do so. I am very camera dumb and dont know what shutter speeds and iso is. Can someone lead me in the right direction of a cheap camera and what I need to look for in a camera.

Several of my friends have been in this situation. Here is what I tell them:

You are not looking for a cheap camera.

Point and shoot cameras can be easy to use and relatively inexpensive to purchase, but do not be tempted into buying one because you will inevitably be dissatisfied.

Sports photography requires quick-reaction and the ability to shoot bursts of pictures. Because of their reaction time (lag) point and shoot
cameras will always help you to miss the moment.

The advice to buy a DSLR is a good one, though I would suggest you look at the Canon Rebel XS and Canon's 75-300 lens. More expensive than what you were expecting, no doubt, but in the end this is the only thing that will work every time.

And, yes, you really should enroll in a photography class. You will not regret it. Do you really expect to learn all about sports-photography from a site like this one ?

BTW, one of my friends was convinced that he could find the perfect point & shoot to capture his kid's sports. He actually went through 4 of them before finally listening to me and purchasing a Canon Rebel. Now he's finally satisfied. You can save yourself the cost and just go straight to a DSLR.
