Dslr help. 550D or 500D?
Basically.
I'm heading off to college in about 3 weeks and one of my Alevels is photography. I need a new camera as I can't take my Dads into college.
Jessops have a Canon 500D for around 580pound which comes with the stock lens and also a 75mm-300mm lens. The 75-300 doesnt have Image stabilzation so without a tripod it wouldn't be very good.
Jessops also have a Canon 550D for 597pound which isnt much more expensive than the 500D but it only comes with a stock lens. Yeah this camera has better specs but is it worth buying this and missing out on a lens that would probably cost around 200pound?

Iv'e read some reviews about the extra lens and its been said to have its faults.
Id really appreciate some guidance on this one.
Thankyou!
The 550D is the newer version of the 500D and they are very, very similar. The 550D has slightly more sensitive autofocus and slightly more accurate metering, but I bet you wouldn't notice this in actual use.
A word on the 75-300mm lens - it is the cheapest lens of its type available for Canon cameras. The optics are OK. It's a perfectly decent lens but obviously it won't compete with the professional lenses. Image stabilisation is overrated in most situations. It is designed to help in situations where the shutter speed is otherwise too slow. In general, a shutter speed roughly equal to the focal length of the lens is about the borderline where you can get away without IS. If you are shooting at 300mm, you'll need to use a shutter speed of 1/500 handheld. You can get it a lot slower with a tripod.
I own the very similar Tamron 70-300mm and it is perfectly satisfactory so long as you use it in bright light, or bump up the ISO to allow you to use fast shutter speeds.
The beauty of interchangeable lenses is if you find in a year's time you really want to specialise in wildlife photography and the 75-300mm isn't cutting it, you can sell it and buy a better one. Given that the prices of the two deals are roughly the same, I think you would get a lot better value from the 500D with two lenses compared with the 550D and one lens.
