Information about a career in photography?

I just wanted to know some basic stats about it, quality of life, if they ever have to struggle to make ends meet due to lack of demand, if there's lots of competition, what I can expect as a starting off income, how easy/hard it is to find work, how well free lancing works out, or if it's better to work for a company (aesthetic or advertising?), if it's probable that my work will get published in magazines, how difficult it is to get recognized and how long before most photographers are recognized and make a good name for themselves.

Photographers can potentially make a substantial income. However its not just based on your skills as a photographer but also your marketing & sales skills. Since the bigger salaries would come from owning your own business. It also depends on what type of photographer you are. I have been helping a friend look for a photographer for her wedding and the average cost starts at 1800 for approx. 4-6 hrs.
