PIC/Arduino for beginners?

My dad got me a PICDEM.NET 2 Microcontroller for Xmas, and I have been wanting to get into the world of microcontrollers for a while, but I've always thought the Arduino was better for simple DIY projects and things, as well as having more documentation and projects and addons for it. Do you think I should return the PIC and get an Arduino? I'll probably only be doing simple servo control, GPS, and camera high speed photography with it (which i'm not sure if i can do with the PIC). I'm only 14 and only have a small programming background
I would probably mostly run things others have written and then make modifications to the program myself

"just run projects others have written (Arduino)?"

What the hell dude? you can write your own programs to the arduino using FUNCTIONS others have written, so in the end the only difference from the PIC is that it's an AVR with a bootloader, if you don't want to use other people's functions, you will have to write in machine code.(jokes, no human should be forced to know that)

The PICs are great to start off with, although the arduino is kind of dummy proof, and more simplified, if you program in assembly you should get really confusing codes, I recommend Mplab + Hi-tec C compiler.
