Top Wedding Photography Tips For Capturing The Moment

It is important to be well trained in the art of photography before embarking on a career in wedding and event photography. If you are considering getting into this field make sure to take the time to study techniques and learn as much as you can. There are a few wedding photography tips that can help you in getting started. Weddings might be the most difficult events to photograph successfully so don't go in unprepared.

Tip 1: Do your research by looking at the portfolios of successful wedding photographers. It is important to study good wedding photography, but it's also important to be careful not to copy the style of another photographer. Inspiration is an important part of developing your style and looking at the work of other photographers is an excellent way to become inspired.

Tip 2: Weddings present a very different situation than studio photography. You will generally not have the lighting set up that you have in the studio. You will have to work primarily with existing light and you must understand how to make that work in your pictures. Reading a book or two on available lighting techniques can be quite helpful. Learning posing techniques is also important for this type of photography. Most clients will want several posed pictures. Posed pictures can look stiff and unnatural if they are done improperly. Researching and experimenting with posing techniques will help you to achieve a natural look.

Tip 3: Understand the vision that the bride and groom have for their wedding day. There are several different wedding photography camps; photojournalistic uses no posing and simply captures events as they happen while the traditional style uses mostly posed shots. The majority of couples today ask for a mixture between the two. It is absolutely necessary to understand what style the client expects.

Tip 4: Do not rely on just a digital camera for the event. Digital cameras are amazing for so many reasons, but they will never be film cameras. Film can still deliver more consistent results than digital can. Some digital masters may argue that, but very few of us are actually masters of digital photography. Shoot with a film camera as well and you will be happy you did.

Tip 5: Do not skimp on marketing your wedding photography business. People are getting engaged and planning weddings every day. Most of these couple have no idea who to call for wedding photography. Getting your name out there through consistent marketing will bring in clients regularly. You will also receive great word of mouth marketing from your happy clients.

It takes a substantial amount of training and knowledge as well as a good eye to become a successful wedding photographer. These wedding photography tips should help point you in the right direction. Read books on the subject, watch videos, and speak with other photographers. Gain as much experience and knowledge as possible and you will have an advantage.
