Canon powershot sx 30 IS help with shutter speed, settings, etc...?

Okay I basically want to take a picture like a self portrait maybe with a timer of myself in a dress in my back yard and I want to make the most of shot. I will probably place it somewhere with a timer. It will be in the morning or afternoon probably (which is better?) I just want to like not use flash because I want the natural light and I want it to be as professional as possible. Which shutterspeed should I use and what settings? Please help, I'll definitely choose a best answer! :) any tips are ppreciated too. I love photography!

If you're not moving, the shutter speed won't matter much.

Early morning light or late afternoon (evening) light will be the most glorious/luxurious.
Watch a movie during mid-day instead. Wait...

BETTER YET: do it on a cloudy day. Super overcast! Flat light, no harsh shadows. Choose an uncluttered background. Set camera on the Human Head Mode ("Portrait," in your instruction manual). Zoom the lens out to telephoto then stand back a long ways.

Use wireless remote if it came with one so you don't have to run into position. If no remote, use a friend instead.

Cloudy/telephoto/simple background/Portrait Mode/Stand up straight! :
You just went Pro!
