What classes should I take in highschool if I am planning on going to Parsons Institute of Design in NYC?
I am a freshmen in highschool and I want to attend Parson's institute of design in New York City. I want to major in fashion design. What classes would be best? Should I take 3 years of spanish? Should I take a fashion merchandising& interior design class? Photography? Art?
In highschool, I would definitely concentrate on the Art side of things. You may need to take a Foundation year at Parsons, where you learn fundamentals such as drawing, before you can go into a degree in fashion and so I would stick to the Art side of things for the most part.
To be accepted they need to see a portfolio of work and so its best to build up your skills initially. Your portfolio could consist of a number of things, above all it needs to be work that shows you have talent; They don't particularly need to see hundreds of garments purely because you want to do fashion, you'll be taught everything fashion-orientated when you major in it anyway. They just need to know that you're serious, that you have the basic skills and that you're passionate and then as far as they're concerned you can major in whatever you want. If you don't need to take a Foundation year, you won't have wasted your time. Simple skills are essential for any art course and would make everything so much easier in the long run.
Anyway, this is only info I picked up while I applied for Foundation myself, check http://www.parsons.edu for more, but good luck with it all!
