"D80 with Pop-Up Commander and 2-SB600's Slaves, How Do I Stop The Motion Blur"?
I have a D80 and right now I'm using the pop up flash as the commander and 2 SB-600 as slaves. This is my first DSLR and I've had it for a little while but, I'm new to the world of flash photography. My main use for them will be extreme sports such as skateboarding and bmx, outside (night and day) and indoor skate parks. While taking pictures today with the set up i mentioned above I was getting some motion blur on all my pictures. I know the top sync speed is 1/200 which isn't doing the job. What is the best way to fix this problem? Do I need to get an SB-800 and use that as my commander? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, Thanks a lot.
What setting and mode were you using? The flash duration is so quick it will stop action better than the 1/4000 second top speed of the D80. Either your flashes were too far away or more likely -- the combination of setting you were using allowed "ambient light" to be captured enough to show up as blurred action or ghosting.
You can also use "Custom Settings Menu" on your D80 to set Auto FP to on -- you can then even use faster shutter speeds up to 1/4000.
You can use this to add to the effect of motion using "Rear Curtain Sync" (Pg 47)
I use the D80 and a SB800 -- I need to learn more about the Auto FP flash setting myself!
