Digital Photography Tutorials - What are filters?
For those of you interested in digital photography tutorialsare going to be a great way to get yourself familiarized with the tricks of the trade. Let's start off by learning some things about digital cameras.
Filters, an essential part of digital cameras, are basically plastic /glass layers that are placed on top of the lens to prevent some light waves from reaching the sensor. And although a majority of the filters are manufactured for DSLR cameras, generic filters can also be purchased to be used with digital cameras.
The first most common type of filter being used is the UV filter. As you might know, the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays can cause a great deal of damage to the camera. This is why all digital photography tutorials insist on it as a prerequisite to take good quality snaps as well as prolong the life of the camera. However, this is not essential if most of your photography activities are indoors. Otherwise, for travelers, this is the best filter to use, as it also protects the front of the lens from physical damage.
The next is the ND Grad, or Neutral Density Graduation filter. This filter is separated into two sections, with one region being significantly darker than the other. The ND filter is used for landscape photography when there is an overexposure of sky as compared to the land. What is does is to darken the sky and balance the exposure stops between the two, i.e., sky and land. The brightness range problem is also significantly solved with this filter. The last filter is the CP-L filter, which is actually not a filter but a polarizer, which can be rotated on a thin surface. This allows you to adjust specific light rays that should pass through the lens onto the sensor. This filter is best used to compensate for the excessive reflections from a surface like a lake or similar surfaces.
