what lens and camera for nature photography?

I am a professional portrait and press photographer who uses Nikon F6 film gear with lenses up to 200mm. I have a Digital D200 which I use for press work. As I enter my 40s I have become more mellow and enjoy the outdoors, animals and birds more than people and would like to try nature and wildlife photography. I am thinking of going canon(better than digital Nikons I believe) but I have been told the D3x is great for what I want to do. Any tips on lenses required?

Both Canon and Nikon make excellent cameras ... neither is better than the other, rather some of the model cameras are better for certain kinds of photography.

Since you already have a Nikon system, switching over to Canons is going to be very expensive ... especially since many of the editorial and sports photographers are moving over from Canon to the Nikon D3 (low noise at high ISO) with the help of NPS.

Like sports photography, the 200-400 mm f/4, 400 mm f/2.8 and 600 mm f/4 are some of the mainstays of wildlife photography.

The new Nikon 14-24 mm FX lens is just amazing. A colleague has one and the performance is without peer. It would be my first choice for landscape and architectural assignments
