Photography Business - Is Photography Convention well worth your investment?

National photographic conventions welcome thousands of photographers to a single convention each year. New York's PhotoPlus International convention is the largest one of its kind in the United States, welcoming over 30,000 attendees. Excellent speakers touch on all aspects of the business. It's worth every penny of the investment to attend at least one each year to catch up on advancements in the industry and invigorate the sleeping artist within you. Three major national conventions to consider are:

• Professional Photographers of America (PPA)

  The Imaging USA annual convention takes place annually, early in the year. Locations vary.
• Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI)

  WPPI's annual convention is held each year in Las Vegas, usually during the first quarter.
• PhotoPlus International Photography and Design Conference + Expo

  PhotoPlus is held in New York City every October.

Smaller conventions are also presented frequently by state and regional PPA affiliates. These are an excellent resource for education, and registration fees are usually lower than for national venues. Additionally, some conventions specialize in children, seniors, school photography, lighting, etc. These allow you to socialize, network, and learn from others who share the same specialty. It can also be a great way to learn about an area of photography you're considering adding to your repertoire. Children and Family Photographers of America (CFPA) (www.cfpamerica.com), Digital Wedding Forum (www.digitalweddingforum.com), and Photoshop World (www.photoshopworld.com) all host specialized conventions.
