Hi There,

Generally what you want to do with the histogram is to do your best to keep everything grouped inside the histogram. You would not want spikes at either end it would ideally look like a "bell".More than anything the histogram will indicate if a photo is too dark or if the background is too bright.

You really cannot change how the picture was originally shot but you can make the 'subject' a little better ( at the expense of the foreground or background). There are adjustments you can make but the most important thing to accomplish is to adjust the photo so it looks good to you.

As for "hue" just adjust so the overall photo does not have either a red or green tint. Again adjust so it looks good to you. Hue adjusts the red or green in the overall photo.

Gamma adjusts the lightness (or darkness) in the entire picture. Both the dark colors and the white colors.

Brightness mainly adjusts how bright the whites are.
Contrast adjusts the difference between the dark and light colors.

Saturation adjusts how "rich" all the colors are. The reds are redder, greens are greener and blues are bluer. You can experiment with saturation to make the photo look "natural" or "surreal".

When I edit a photo I usually adjust the brightness (either lighter or darker) until it looks OK then adjust the contrast (increase) until the subject of the picture becomes prominent.

The main thing to remember is to experiment to make your photos look good to you. Your eye is the final judge.

Good luck and keep experimenting,
Al
